# Description
Participants research the annual topic and subtopics and prepare for a debate against a team from another chapter. Teams are instructed to take either the pro or con side of a selected subtopic, submit a summary of references, and use their research to support their assigned position. The quality of a team’s debate determines semifinalists and finalists.
# Theme 2026-2027
Theme: Artificial Intelligence in Medicine
Topic 1: AI diagnostic tools should be allowed to make medical decisions without final approval from a physician.
Topic 2: The use of AI in healthcare will improve access to care more than it will increase medical bias.
Topic 3: Patients should have the right to know when AI is involved in their diagnosis or treatment plan.

Three (3) teams of two (2) per chapter may compete at the state qualifier. Participants must compete in the state qualifier for their respective region. Only the top ten winners from each qualifier will advance to the state competition. Information about the state qualifier can be found here.
